A hugely recognizable picture, The Scream was created four times, using different media, by Norwegian expressionist artist, Edvard Munch. In 1994 thieves stole the 1893 tempura-on-cardboard version of the picture from the National Gallery in Oslo. Gallery authorities refused to pay the $1 million ransom called for, but it was recovered three months later anyway. The 1910 tempera-on-board version was stolen from the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, in 2004 by two armed men who threatened guards on duty. It was found after about two years – though nobody has ever revealed how or where it was recovered. Another version of the picture is understood to be the most expensive piece of art that has ever sold at an auction. The 1895 pastel-on-board version sold for almost $120 million at a Sotheby’s sale in 2012.
