He was born as Karol Józef Wojtyla in Poland. He served as a pope from 1978 to 2005. He was elected by the second Papal conclave in 1978. The election lasted three days. After his death, John Paul II has been made a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. He helped the ending of the Communist rule in Poland. He improved the relation of the Catholic Church with Judaism and Islam. He was the second longest serving pope in modern history. Pope Pius IX was the longest serving pope. He was hospitalized with breathing problems caused by influenza. He got better, but soon he got hospitalized again with breathing problems. In 2005 he fell into coma. He died in 2005. His funeral was the 5th most expensive. It costed 12 million dollars.
