#5 Yuyuan Garden, China
The Chinese civilization is one of the oldest in the world, and their gardens have inspired people worldwide. Amongst other things, the ancient Chinese believed that spring was eternal. This luxuriously beautiful Chinese garden – Yù Yuán, directly translated to mean the garden of happiness, or garden of contentment – is located alongside Shanghai’s City God Temple. It is thought to have been built in the mid-1500s, during the Ming Dynasty. The garden is laid out of five acres (two hectares) following the well-documented Chinese Suzhou Style, with dragon walls separated each different part. The inner garden that incorporates koi ponds, rockeries, towers and pavilions was laid out in the early 1700s.
